The series entitled Field Disturbance consists of two 3D-printed lithophanes; Domain Schism and Field Fallow.
Martha Kicsiny combines the 19th-century lithophanes with modern 3D printing to “rematerialize” light-based digital culture and imagery. While traditional lithophanes once met popular desires for light-based images of hope and faith, her contemporary versions confront the crises of truth and faith shaping our present.
Her series Field Disturbance investigates how the once intangible world of the internet has acquired undeniable influence over the political realities of physical communities. Domain Schism addresses the radicalization and polarization driven by algorithms and information warfare, exposing the destabilization of institutions that we trusted for generations.
The title Field Fallow references the agricultural practice of letting used land rest after overfarming and to break cycles of fighting against pests and disease. It raises the question whether such a restorative pause could be applied to rebuild a healthier ecosystem of communication and representation among our communities.

A Field Fallow címe a mezőgazdasági gyakorlatra utal, amely során a használt földet pihentetik, hogy megszakítsák a kártevők és növénybetegségek körforgását. Egyben felveti a kérdést: vajon alkalmazható hasonló folyamat a kommunikáció és a hatalomreprezentáció újraindítására egy egészségesebb ökoszisztéma megteremtése érdekében?
