Soft Covering

Soft Covering explores the power structures and social hierarchies that emerged with renewed visibility during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The exhibition presents large-scale sight-specific prints of interiors constructed from life-sized human bodies, creating immersive spatial illusions. By surrounding the viewer with these monumental works, the installation deliberately contrasts with the conditions under which art was largely experienced during the pandemic—reduced to images viewed through the confined dimensions of computer screens. Each work reflects on a different social consequence of the pandemic. The Throne examines the unprecedented experience of surrendering personal freedoms to systems of authority and governance. The School portrays rows of empty desks, evoking a reality that rapidly became familiar despite having seemed unimaginable only a short time before. Death remained a constant presence throughout the pandemic, both as an immediate threat and as a pervasive source of fear. Yet opportunities for direct confrontation with loss, and for the communal rituals traditionally associated with mourning, were often absent. The life-sized image of the Catafalque offers a symbolic space for this missing encounter, serving as a substitute for rituals that could not take place.

A lágyburkolat egy építőipari szakkifejezés. A szakszótárak szerint, egy burkolási eljárás, ami során a falfelületet textiliával, vászonnal, papírral, tapétával burkolják. Vagyis olyan anyaggal, ami fizikumából fakadóan puha jellegű. Ilyen maga az emberi bőr is. Burkolta azoknak a falaknak, amiket emberi testek alkotnak, amik épületekké, sőt városi terekké válnak. Így az emberi test válik a hatalom struktúrájának és működésének szimbólumává. Egy alapegységgé, mely olyan akár az építészetben a tégla.
Mi magunk milyen társadalmi struktúra építőelemei vagyunk?
Kicsiny Martha munkáinak alapmotívuma az emberi test, mely falakat alkot, épületeket emel. Azon hatalom dinamikájának leképzése, ami megfigyelté és megfigyelővé tesz. Kifejezve az egyén szorongását, életének döntéshelyzeteit, ami falba beleépíti, vagy kiemeli onnan. Az 19.-20. század társadalmi utópiái építészetként öltöttek testet. Így állhat az építészet és a társadalom struktúrája analógiába egymással.
